Aerospace Cladding: Technological Development & Global Shifts

As modern aerospace structures push the limits of speed, altitude, and thermal resistance, traditional welding processes are being replaced by highly precise cladding systems. From Plasma Transferred Arc (PTAW) to multi-axis automated laser metal deposition, China is emerging as a global center of excellence for aerospace cladding systems.

Extreme Wear Protection

Thermal fatigue, oxidation, and cavitation resistance are critical in high-pressure aerospace parts. Our cladding technology deposits metallurgical coatings with minimal dilution rates, protecting critical nickel, titanium, and cobalt superalloys in challenging operating environments.

Low Dilution & Minimal HAZ

Traditional arc welding introduces extreme heat, causing grain growth and thermal distortion. Advanced laser and PTA systems limit the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ), maintaining the microstructural integrity of underlying aerospace alloys while achieving near-net-shape deposition.

Automation & AI Control

By using multi-axis CNC gantries, synchronized positioners, and closed-loop optical feedback systems, we ensure consistent coating thickness, eliminate internal voids, and deliver predictable microstructures for high-value applications.

Technical Whitepaper: Surface Metallurgy in Aerospace Applications

This section discusses the metallurgical requirements and processing strategies that define advanced aerospace surface engineering. It highlights why aerospace manufacturers are moving away from thermal spraying in favor of fused cladding layers.

1. PTA vs. Laser Cladding: Selecting the Optimal Heat Source

Both Plasma Transferred Arc Welding (PTAW) and Laser Cladding (LC) are used for high-performance surface modifications, but they suit different engineering requirements:

  • Laser Cladding (LC): Uses a focused laser beam to melt powder alloys and a thin layer of the substrate. LC delivers low heat input, a small heat-affected zone, minimal distortion, and dilution rates below 1%. This makes it well-suited for high-precision turbine blades, aero-engine housings, and landing gear parts made of thin-walled superalloys.
  • Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA): Uses a constricted arc plasma to melt powder or wire. PTA offers higher deposition rates, strong metallurgical bonding, and deep penetration control. It is ideal for large aerospace ground support gear, oil drilling assemblies, and heavy hydraulic cylinders where thick overlays (1.5mm to over 6mm) are needed.

2. Dilution Control and Microstructural Performance

Dilution rate is the mixing of the substrate material with the cladding alloy. In aerospace applications, controlling dilution is crucial. If dilution is too high, the substrate elements (such as iron in steel) can migrate into the cobalt or nickel cladding overlay, reducing its wear and corrosion resistance.

Our automated PTA and Laser systems maintain dilution levels below 3% (and under 1% for laser configurations). This helps preserve the mechanical properties of materials like tungsten carbide (WC-Co) and nickel-chromium-boron-silicon (NiCrBSi) alloys.

3. Advanced Powder Feed Systems and Precision Alloys

Consistent powder feeding is essential for high-quality cladding. Standard gravimetric feeders can suffer from pulsation, leading to variations in the cladding layer. Our technical department has developed integrated powder feeders with digital closed-loop controls, ensuring smooth delivery of superalloys under varying chamber pressures.

Frequently Asked Questions: Industrial & Aerospace Cladding

Explore detailed answers to technical questions about plasma transferred arc (PTAW) and laser cladding technologies.

What is the difference in dilution rates between Laser Cladding and standard PTAW? +
Laser cladding generally produces low dilution rates, often under 1%, because of the highly focused energy source. PTAW typically exhibits dilution rates between 3% and 10%. However, using our specialized power control systems, we can optimize the PTA process to maintain dilution rates under 5% for critical components.
Which superalloys can be processed using your PTA and Laser systems? +
Our systems process a wide range of industrial powders, including cobalt-based alloys (e.g., Stellite 6, Stellite 12, Stellite 21), nickel-based alloys (e.g., Inconel 625, Inconel 718, NiCrBSi), iron-based alloys, and carbide composites like Tungsten Carbide (WC-Co) matrices.
How does your technical department ensure consistency in powder feeding? +
We develop integrated dual-cylinder powder feeders. These systems use digital pressure sensors and feedback loops to control carrier gas velocity and rotation speeds, ensuring uniform powder delivery to the melt pool.
Can your cladding systems process internal bores or deep holes? +
Yes. We supply specialized internal cladding torches, such as the 120A Deep Hole Welding Torch. These torches feature low clearance profiles and cooling channels, allowing them to deposit wear-resistant alloys inside bores as small as 80mm at depths up to 2 meters.
How do you manage thermal distortion in thin-walled aerospace components? +
We use pulsed-current controls, high-speed laser positioning, and synchronized water-cooled tables to manage heat input. This keeps the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) small, minimizing distortion and preserving the base properties of the component.
What automation interfaces do Shanghai Duomu machines support? +
Our platforms support modern industrial communication protocols (such as Profinet and EtherCAT). This allows our cladding power sources to interface with multi-axis CNC gantries, external positioning tables, and robotic arms from manufacturers like KUKA, ABB, and Fanuc.
Is custom engineering available for specific geometry parts? +
Yes, we design specialized workstations for specific part geometries, such as screw brick machines, valve guides, hydraulic rods, and mining drills. We provide customized positioners, tailstocks, and pathing software to suit your production requirements.
How do you guarantee quality for export shipments? +
All export equipment goes through a complete dry-run testing cycle. We run validation test plates to confirm proper power output, powder feed consistency, and electrical safety before packing and shipping.
