While both methods utilize a non-consumable tungsten electrode and an inert shielding gas (usually Argon), WIG cladding uses a free arc that is relatively wide and less focused. PTA (Plasma Transferred Arc) cladding constricts the arc through a specialized copper nozzle orifice, forming a highly collimated plasma beam. This constriction produces a much higher energy density, narrower heat-affected zone (HAZ), higher travel speeds, and lower dilution rates, making PTA the preferred choice for applying thick, wear-resistant coatings with alloy powders.
The dilution rate refers to the percentage of the base metal that melts and mixes into the deposited cladding alloy layer. In severe operating conditions (such as high-temperature gas pipelines or abrasive mining screws), high dilution deteriorates the properties of the wear-resistant overlay by introducing too much substrate iron (Fe). Keeping dilution under 5%—which is standard with Shanghai Duomu’s automatic PTA cladding systems—ensures the cladding retains its maximum hardness, corrosion resistance, and carbide distribution.

Our PTA surfacing equipment is designed to process a wide variety of alloy powders, including nickel-based alloys, cobalt-based alloys (e.g., Stellite 6, 12, 21), iron-based self-fluxing alloys, and composite powders containing tungsten carbide particles (WC-Co/Ni). The gas flow rate and feed speed can be finely adjusted to prevent tungsten carbide dissolution during the high-temperature plasma process.
